The Important Things

Just over two years ago, I sat on our wedding stage fully decked out in a beautiful (and heavy!) lengha and jewelry – it was FINALLY our wedding day! I was very excited and anticipated this day because it meant that my husband and I would be together forever, inshAllah and this was just the first step. Knowing that I’d be waking up next to my best friend, have a permanent movie partner and live a long and happy life together made me feel overjoyed and excited.

Now, fast forward a couple years, and we are still who we were when we first met. We love cuddling, watching movies, and just being silly together. Allah has provided us both with new jobs that we love so much, a beautiful condo that we love to go home to, great friends and family, and just life as a happy married couple. We couldn’t be happier – we even just bought our first house (AH) and we get the keys for it tomorrow (iA).

However, in between all the good stuff, there are always sad things that happen in people’s lives – and it was no different for us. One thing I’ve come to realize over the past little while, is how important our health is –  you never know what can happen to someone in the blink of an eye.

A few months ago, I was in the ICU for something (I’ll save that story for another day) and all I remember thinking about while sedated was the desire to continue to do everyday routinely things with my husband. I didn’t want to be in the ICU, I didn’t want needles in my veins, I just wanted to live my life. At that moment, I appreciated life so much more, I appreciated all the regular things we do on a daily basis even more. While I was completely unconscious, that husband of mine stayed by my bed side, was there every time I opened my eyes, gave me water and made me smile. I remember my dad coming to me when I finally woke up and saying “Do you know how much Irshad loves you? He didn’t leave your side once.”

God, I think I fell even more in love with him at that moment. More than ever before.

Processed with Rookie(while in the ICU, I asked him to send my friends this snap chat to let them know I was doing okay)

A couple months later, I am doing okay while still checking into the hospital for routinely checkups. Throughout this whole process I truly realized how short life is… those little fights you have with your husband? Totally not worth it. Those things you get angry about – why? Those matters that you have unnecessary anxiety over? Why bother? In a blink of an eye, your life can turn completely upside down. Don’t waste what could be your last days on earth being upset over situations that won’t matter in the long run. Love those around you, treat everyone well and live your life to the fullest because you never know what can happen.

Just thought I’d share something personal for once. I’ll get back to fashion and beauty in no time.

Big shout out to my girl Hafsa who is my go to editor!
ALSO, it’s her birthday today – Happy Birthday HAFZUH!

5 Reasons Why You Should Dress Up Every Single Day

When the weather outside is gloomy and you’re feeling down, the best way to get your mood back up into gear is by throwing on your favorite outfit and walking out of that door with all the confidence in the world.

Dressing up every day is very good for you because of many reasons. For starters, you feel beyond amazing, you are more approachable, you perform better, you are positive, and you become more confident! You never know who you may bump into that day at the office, whether it’s a CEO or a higher level executive, you could even run into an old enemy and I’m sure you want to look your BEST for that one, and lastly who knows? What if you meet a dashing tall dark and handsome stranger on the street car? You truly never know who you will meet or bump into and that’s why first impressions are always super important.

People even treat you differently when you are well dressed up as opposed to wearing old raggedy worn out clothes, they think differently of you. In an office setting, you can be seen as someone who is intelligent and ready for the day as opposed to someone who looks like they don’t care about their job or the company.

In conclusion, dressing up every day not only boosts your self-confidence and self-esteem but it also allows for great first impressions and a positive outlook for the day. Below you will find 5 reasons why you should dress up every day:

  1. It puts on your A Game – By dressing up daily, you feel confident and ready to conquer the world! You are more positive, happy and confident!
  2. It’s Fun – Who doesn’t love to dress up? Heck, we used to play dress up as kids! Why play dress up now when you actually CAN dress up. Find your style, match up items you never would before and get out of your comfort zone. Planning your weekly outfits is always fun! (well at least for me it is)
  3. First Impressions – “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have” – I am sure you have heard this quote before. Remember that you never know who you will meet that day, always dress to impress!
  4. Self-Expression – Fashion is a method of self-expression. People understand who you are by how you are dressed.
  5. Routine – By Dressing up daily, you are making a routine which is always a positive factor in life. The night before, you are laying out your clothes and ready to take on the next day. A routine is a wonderful way to get your day started; you will feel energized and awake and prepared for what’s ahead in your day.

I hope this blog post was a boost of confidence for the rest of the week! I know that sometimes we aren’t in the mood, especially with this gloomy weather in Toronto but that 5 minutes it takes to dress up switches around your whole day!

Lookbook Edition: How to dress for your body shape

I struggled with the idea of making this video and blog for a while… it went from a body image, confidence & fashion blog to finally a “how to dress for your body shape” blog. The reason for my struggle was because I felt that the topic of body image was quite controversial, and I didn’t want to deal with the abundant amount of hate comments and negative criticism we all know there can be from a video like this.

A few months ago, I gathered a couple of my friends and I asked them what they feel comfortable wearing. Once I heard the answers, I collaborated my inspiration from Pinterest and various magazines and came up with looks that I thought best suited my friends and I, while still incorporating clothing articles that they are most comfortable in. So after all these weeks of photography, editing, and scheduling, I present you my personal take on fashionable looks, titled *insert drumroll * “how to dress for your body shape.” We decided to keep the looks very casual dressy and portray how each look emphasizes our beautiful bodies. Hopefully, you are able to relate to at least one of our body shapes and try some of these looks on your own!

First, we have my beautiful friend Fatma who we consider to be the average body type. Fatma is a very classy and trendy girl who likes to keep it modest. You think it’s hard? Not at all. Fatma is wearing a dark denim button up shirt tucked into a black midi skirt with white shoes for a pop of colour. She’s accessorized her looks by wearing a beautiful silver necklace, a gold Michael Kors watch, and a nude Kate Spade purse. Fatma is dressing for her body type and showing off her toned figure by tucking in her denim shirt and wearing a very trendy skirt that adds a big of pizzazz to her shape. By wearing a midi skirt, which is tight at the waist but loose at the hips, Fatma is focusing attention away from being drawn to her lower half. She also elongates her legs by wearing a pair of beautiful white heels to finish off this trendy autumn outfit.

Top – Denim Shirt from H&M
Skirt – Black Midi Skirt from H&M
Shoes – “Roessing” from Aldo
Accessories – Michael Kors Watch, Kate Spade Grove Court Daley Purse, Statement Necklace and Hijab from Hijabi Mama

Secondly, we have curvaceous Shumaina! Shumaina has narrow-set hips, and a booty, so we wanted to pair her in pants that would bring attention to all the right places! #babygotback Shumaina is wearing medium-dark washed jeans with a navy blue blouse tucked in. She has paired this look with a brown belt, a pair of cool oxford’s and a beautiful red blazer for that pop of colour that everyone wants this fall season. Here, Shumaina has defined her body shape beautifully by tucking her blouse into her jeans and wearing a belt. By tucking in her blouse and not leaving it hanging, Shumaina is elongating her legs and accentuating her waistline. Because Shumaina wants to highlight her smaller waist and legs and take focus away from her behind, she’s chosen a longer blazer that not only highlights her best assets, but also allows her to feel comfortable! As a final touch, let’s focus on Shumain’s choice of colours for a second: dark. Don’t get me wrong, I love my pastels, but let’s be serious here ladies, some truths are universal: darker will always make everyone look slimmer!

Top – Fitted Non –Iron Dotted Shirt from Banana Republic
Blazer – Boyfriend Blazer from Forever21
Bottoms– Boyfriend Fit Jeans from H&M
Shoes – Fogliani Oxfords from Aldo
Accessories – Belt – Camel colored from H&M, Michael Kors Rose Gold Watch and “Heart of Gold: Idiom Bangle from Kate Spade

Lastly, we have me! I’m considered to be a “plus size” girl, and because of that, I feel most comfortable in dresses that accentuate, but also minimize my “problem areas” like every girl! The biggest part of my body is my hips, which means that baby doll or pleated dresses are definitely the most flattering for my body shape. In this look, I am wearing a cream colored pleated dress, paired with a faux fur vest, black panty hose and kitten heels for comfort. Wearing a dress with this height and pairing it with these heels allows me to look taller and my legs to look leaner. Lastly, as a side note, pairing this dress with a faux fur vest is perfect for that autumn look as it adds warmth and a touch of glam to my look!

Top – Pleated Dress from H&M (a few years ago)
Vest – Faux Fur Vest from Aritzia
Bottoms – Panty Hose from H&M
Shoes – Nine West
Accessories – Acrylic purse from Peplum Fashion, Kate Spade Watch, Kate Spade Bracelet and Pearl Necklace from Forever21, Iphone case from Velvet Cavier,

I hope that you guys enjoyed this look book and all the pictures we took below. Let me know if you want to see more videos like this! Thanks so much for tuning in and always remember…

Be confident about who you are and what you wear. Be confident about who you are and what you wear, because if its something I have learned in my 25 years, it is confidence that will take you far in life.

Get Ready With Me: Bollywood Inspired Look

Hi friends,

We are almost at the end of the week which is rather exciting because I have a lot of pictures to take for all the ideas that are running around in my head for my YouTube and Blog! A few weekends ago, we had a dawat and I knew I just had to film for you guys. The only issue with filming the day that you are actually supposed to be going somewhere is TIMING! I never can seem to schedule myself accordingly to be done filming and be early or on time for the dawat. Even if I give myself 2-3 hours, something goes wrong – here is a list of a few things that can happen while I’m filming: my battery dies and I have to recharge it, my memory stick runs out and I have to load the video clips on my computer and then start again, or the sun starts to set and I need to set up my lights.. sometimes there are problems after problems! Regardless, I love doing it however I find that sometimes the idea that I have in my mind doesn’t always come to life. For instance, in this video I wanted to film my whole outfit and show you guys what I wore but because the dawat was at night, we weren’t getting good lighting and the camera just wasn’t focusing on the outfit how I would have liked it to. Anyways, enough rambling on, I hope you guys had a chance to see the video, if not click above and check it out!

This video was a Bollywood Inspired Look where my eyes were gold with heavy eyeliner and my face was contoured to the T. I added more glamor to the look by using my Lilly G. lashes as well as wearing some show stopping jewelry! SopTeaParty & Modah Meet and Greet

Hi Friends!

Seems like its a blogging day today. A little over a week ago, some friends and I had a very busy saturday where we attended the Silk of Paradise Tea Party to celebrate their anniversary and finished off at Modah to do a meet and greet! At the SOP Tea Party I met some amazing local entrepreneurs, got to take some pictures behind a beautiful back drop and of course sipped on some delicious tea!

At Modah, I was able to meet some awesome fellow bloggers and vloggers which gave me even more encouragement to keep on going with my YouTube videos. I also shopped of course at Modesty Collections (I cant stop) and bought some deeeeelicious halal candy from Blossom & Bean. Modah is a large store that has a variety of different vendors from women’s clothing to candy and household Islamic decor! You must check it out!

I just have to say that It’s really nice to know that our community is evolving and that our local Muslim entrepreneurs are providing such excellence! Not only does it make me happy to be apart of something so great but it gives me the encouragement to move forward in my dreams and what I want to do in life. I am truly so proud of all the vendors who have such amazing pieces of clothing for us Muslim girls to dress modestly AND fashionable, to Lindsay at Blossom & Bean who’s halal candy has opened wonders for my little cousins, LOL! and to my fellow bloggers and vloggers who’s posts on fashion and beauty show that Muslim girls can be both modest and fashionable. I truly love it all!

Pictures from both events, links to various vendors and my OOTD details are all listed below. XO!
